Grafenegg [ENA] The 23rd and the 24th of June 2023 marked the beginning of the traditional Grafenegg summer festival. This festival takes place every year at the premises of the famous fairytale Grafenegg castle which is situated in the middle of the huge romantic park. The fulminant summer night gala marked the beginning of the festive season in Grafenegg which will last for almost three months.

This Grafenegg summer festival will be full of joy, surprises, fresh impressions and expectations about elaborated music, fascinating evenings, virtuous performances, and wonderful summer nights. These summer nights in Grafenegg will be full of the feeling of joy from the elaborated atmosphere of the Grafenegg festival and the feeling of a fest which reminds a taste of champaign in the mouth.

This year’s traditional Summer Night Gala in Grafenegg was marked by two remarkable voices of our time: German soprano Marlis Petersen and Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott. The young Austrian trumpeter Selina Ott filled the voiceless intermissions together with Giachino Rossini’s intermezzo ‘Passo a sei’ from the opera ‘Guglielmo Tell” and Charles Gounod’ Faust Waltz from “Faust’’. Both played masterfully, if not almost acrobatically, by the host Tonkünstler Orchestra under less enthusiastic Yutaka Sado who was suiting the ambiance and orchestra’s technical aptitude.

Mr. Schrott was performing the Mozart’s aria «Madamina, il catalogo è questo» from Don Giovanni and the hit song «Bésame mucho». The appearance irradiated familiar Mr. Schrott’s brilliance in this role. Anyway the announcement of indisposed Erwin Schrott but still his wiliness to satiate the musical urge of so many admirers, caused quite a wave of simultaneous dismay and relief. The feeling that even the brilliantly, almost acrobatically, played overture from Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Candide’ by the Tonkünstler Orchestra under Yutaka Sado, couldn’t erase.

Marlis Petersen’s lustrous voice and cogent stage presence excused with gnerous indulgence the cumbersome transition from the jazz-like showpiece to a late romantic “Cäcilie” by Richard Strauss. With all invested efforts and commitment, Selina Ott attempted to uphold the evening's shaping temper. The first movement of Vladimir Peskin’s Concerto Nr. 1 for Trumpet and Orchestra was played skullfully. Later in the evening performed Canzona Napolitana arranged for the trumpet by Herman Bellstedt, slowed the tempo of this festive event.

But reverting to the one who saved this evening from almost predestined fall into the category of something hardly rememberable, despite all decorative and representable efforts. After Strauss’ ‘Cäcilie’, followed a csardas «Wenn die Zigeunergeige singt» from operretta Die Perle von Tokaj by Fred Raymond. Elaborate black dress ornated with red roses on one side and musical incorporation with flaming, without pretence, galvanised the public and musicians on stage.

The diversity of Mr. Petersen’s talent, also for those who remember her fulminant Maria Stuarta at the Theater an der Wien, continued shining in disconsolate Michel Legrand’s «Where is it written?» from the movie ‘Yentl’ and especially in Harold Arlen’s «Somewhere over the Rainbow» from the movie “The Wizard of Oz’ (1939). Her chanting voice, along with birds’ chirping, lit of verdure of the forest and gleaming silver dress, made one feel what the summer gala feels like.
